Compost Effectiveness on Organic Hay Land Studied

A four-year on-farm study in Idaho is looking at whether it is cost-effective to haul distant dairy compost to organic hay ground to maintain soil health, reports Ag Weekly. University of Idaho extension educators are asking whether large amounts of compost can be applied every other year to barley and hay fields rather than hauling 5 tons per acre every year. Crop quality and yield are being monitored throughout the study. During the first year of the study, the participating hay grower in Blaine County saw a significant yield advantage when either 5 or 10 ton per acre compost were applied compared to the control, but no difference between the 5 and 10 ton rate. Barley yields were slightly higher in the 10-ton-per-acre rate plots versus the 5-ton-per-acre plots
